Answer a few questions and the picker shows every WoW: Forever class that fits, with the races that can play it on your faction. It does not rank classes or guess at balance. It filters on facts Blizzard has published: each class's roles, whether it fights with a pet, whether it can stealth, and which races can play it.
How the picker decides
- Roles come from the closing summary in each of Blizzard's class deep dives. If you tick more than one role, a class must be able to fill all of them, which is useful if you want to tank in dungeons and deal damage while questing.
- Combat pet means the class fights alongside a permanent pet: Hunters and Warlocks.
- Stealth means the class can stealth: Rogues, and Druids in Cat Form. Night Elves of any class also have Shadowmeld, which only works while standing still, so it is not counted here.
- Switch roles means the class can fill more than one of tank, healer and damage: Druid, Paladin, Priest, Shaman and Warrior. Dual Specialization at level 40 makes switching easier.
- Races come from Blizzard's official race and class tables. Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher.
Things the picker deliberately ignores
Balance and "best class" rankings. Blizzard tuned classes throughout beta and said changes would continue, so any ranking made before launch is a guess. What does not change with tuning is each class's toolkit, and Blizzard is explicit about the trade-offs:
- Druid guide: Can fill any role with the right gear and talents, but has no snare, silence or interrupt and weaker crowd control. Plan Druid talents.
- Hunter guide: Damage only, with the longest range in the game and a pet that can tank solo content, but no stun or interrupt and a dead zone within 8 yards. Plan Hunter talents.
- Mage guide: Strongest and most varied ranged area damage, Polymorph crowd control and food and water for the group, but extremely fragile in melee. Plan Mage talents.
- Paladin guide: Effective tank, competitive damage dealer and the strongest single-target healer, but no interrupt, no way to slow enemies and limited range. Plan Paladin talents.
- Priest guide: The most versatile healer with direct heals, heals over time and absorb shields, but wears cloth and has few ways to escape. Plan Priest talents.
- Rogue guide: Master of Stealth with exclusive Poisons and the highest potential single-target melee damage in the game. Plan Rogue talents.
- Shaman guide: Totem-based support that can heal or deal melee or spell damage, wears mail and a shield, but lacks effective crowd control. Plan Shaman talents.
- Warlock guide: Three very different damage styles built on curses, demons and fire, but physically weak and dependent on demon pets for protection. Plan Warlock talents.
- Warrior guide: Master of melee who can tank or deal damage and the only melee class with sustained multi-target damage, but has few ways to recover from damage taken. Plan Warrior talents.
